ABC’s Last Days on Earth, which aired last night as a special edition of 20/20, galloped through seven scenarios for the end of the world, aided by Al Gore and a gaggle of prominent scientists (including the ebullient American Museum of Natural History astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson), and punctuated with earnest vox poppery and some rather stilted, angular commentary from Stephen Hawking.
And according to ABC, the nominees for the most likely end-of-world scenario are:
- A gamma ray burst or black hole;
- Artificial Intelligence on the loose;
- A supervolcano;
- The Earth getting hit by an asteroid;
- Nuclear annihilation;
- A natural or bioterrorist pandemic; and
- Global warming, also known as that thing Al Gore’s always talking about.
See more hype here.
During interludes in the discussion, average folks talked about what they would do with the rest of their lives if they knew the exact time and date of the end of the world.

[...] Update: See What Would You Do With Your ‘Last Days’? [...]

I would start a bonfire with my wardrobe of business suits and roast marshmallows.

A friend of mine knows someone who was literally told he had less than a year to live. He applied for every credit card he could, and maxed them all out giving himself a wonderful round-the-world tour in first class on various cruise ships.
Of course, the punchline is that it was a misdiagnosis. He behaved so badly that he ruined his reputation, couldn’t get another job because of that, had to declare bankruptcy, his wife left him, it was a complete tv movie in the making. I would feel sorrier except that he knew quite well he was ripping people off while he was doing it.

This program came on history channel last night, and I stayed up until one watching it. I’m now very interested in the Sciences. Thank you Stephen Hawking for opening my eyes.

Well, B-RAD, YOU sir, are one sad individual.
Most of us think we have a lifetime to accomplish all the important & decent things life offers and your top priority is self gratification. You wouldn’t make sure you took care of your eternity? You wouldn’t make sure you apologized to every human being you might’ve hurt? You wouldn’t tell those most dear to you how much they mean to you? You wouldn’t try to leave some kind of legacy behind?
And people wonder why society is in the shape it’s in.
God help us all.

KLS,
Yes, if B-RAD is any indication of the deficient mental/social/spiritual capacities of our youth today we are indeed in trouble…
On a more serious note I want to face certain death with those that I love, and those that love me, around me. Surrounded by and with love is the only way I want to face death…

I just want to face death with the knowledge that I did the best I could with what I had every day that I had on earth.
